We have been to Nellie's twice, once for breakfast and once for lunch. The food was delicious both times, and the staff was very friendly. Rembember that this small and usually busy restaurant is a cash only establishment.

Cash only. ATM located inside. Friendly, fast service. Ordered the two beef tacos. I have had a lot of Mexican in my life and this does not stand up to good Mexican food. It is overly greasy and bland. The limeade was very good and refreshing.

Nellie's is a staple in Las Cruces, New Mexico. It is one of the oldest establishments in Las Cruces. EVERYONE has to eat there at least once. Best Mexican food in LC. You won't be able to find it unless you know a Las Crucesan that is willing to share a treasure.

As a local and NM cuisine expert, I would say hands down this is one of the best NM restaurants in the State. It is locally owned and in the kitchen you will find grandma, aunties and the whole family working. The huevos rancheros are the best thing on the menu. I get it with both red and green chile and meat, which melts in your mouth it's so tender. The service is friendly, but not the best, however this is not the ritz, so I don't expect perfect table service. What I do get is friendly service, amazing food that is second to my mother who has been cooking NM food her entire life. For anyone looking to taste true regional cuisine, this is the place. Forget about Mesilla and the over priced food there, this place is authentic, and delicious. The only other good NM restaurants are in Santa Fe, like Tomasitas, Maria's, and Tia Sophia's.

Great chimichanga plate with rice and beans. We will be back!

This place is Awesome!! Very authentic, small-family run restaurant feel. The focus here is on food, not furnishings. Everything I have had here is excellent. They especially have the best chili rellenos in town. And I love that their sauces and salsa actually have some bite - I like it hot!! :) It does get crowded - just wait, it is worth it!! Only downside: They close at 2pm.

OMG... probably this was the best mexcan food I've ever had in my entire life time. I had double barrel burritos and the waitress was nice enough to split the red sauce on one and green sauce on the other. I must have died and have gone to mexican food haven. I strongly recommend this place and bring cash as this place does not accept credit card.

Green chili anything is great here! they even subsituted green chili for jalapeno for me! Really friendly and a comfortable place to eat.I highly recomend a stop here watch the hours though not open late!

The Best Huevos Rancheros we have ever eaten. Flavorful is just the beginning. They start with a tortilla on the bottom, two perfectly fried eggs on top of the tortilla, a mix of melted cheeses and then smothered with green chili and pork. Not to hot but the flavor is big. Salsa and chips were excellent. Service was very friendly. Refills on coffee were often. Restaurant was very clean. I am in a large electric wheelchair and there was enough room for me to maneuver even with Nellie's being packed with customers.

OK. Here's a few things you need to know about Nellie's. Contrary to the information on Yelp, Nellie's does not accept credit cards, checks or debit cards. There is an ATM in the restaurant to get cash for your convenience. Nellies is closed on mondays and is only open for breakfast and lunch. The restaurant is closed at 2:00PM. This is a family owned restaurant that has been in Las Cruces for many years. Zero ambience and not a place to impress a date, but if you want truly authentic New Mexican cuisine, generous portions and very reasonable prices, it doesn't get much better than this. Try anything with the green chilie. You can't go wrong. I'm not Hispanic, but if I were I bet this is the way my grandmother would have prepared the food. Nothing fancy. Just good authentic New Mexican dishes that won't leave you hungry after you leave.

How could there not be a review on this place yet? Not only is this where I want my last meal, this is where I want to live in the forever after. The food is delectable and the honey dessert is pure love. The place looks like the back of a kitchen, but it's clean. Full of locals. (If you are in the neighborhood, make sure to visit White Sands National Monument -- it really does look like Heaven)

Great home cooked food! The flavors reminded me of my childhood and my aunt who has been cooking similar dishes in South Texas for years. Nellie's adds the New Mexican chiles to their recipes. Yum!

Growing up in Las Cruces. Nellie's Cafe is a fixture in the city. They have the best Mexican food in the city. Love the generous portions they give. I'm just sad that they don't have any branches way out here in Austin Texas. I always recommend Nellie's to my friends when they head out to Las Cruces.

This is the place to go for authentic New Mexican food in Las Cruces. I have eaten here numerous times, and have loved it every time. The food is tasty and can be quite spicy. Get there early to avoid the rush as the building is quite small with limited dining space. This restaurant is the pinnacle of great New Mexican food! I cannot recommend this one enough!

Ok you go to Nellie's for ONE THING! that's the green chile...and it is very, very spicy- but not so much that it ruins your meal. What bothers me is people critiquing this restaurant on their chile rellenos! To me, that's like critiquing McDonalds on their Raspberry iced tea....huh? This place passed my 3 prong mexican food test. I rarely share it, but it goes like this: move all your beans together into a pile. Move all your rice into a pile. Now, take your fork- if u can stand your fork up in the beans without it falling over, add one point. Do the same with the rice, but who cares if ur fork falls... just take a bite, If they're good, add a point (u get it now?) It's hard to f**k up refried beans besides consistency wise? If they're bland, add salt! Anyways, part three...try the chile verde bañado. If it's good, add another point. This family slash place has stupid hours, a tiny dining area, & they are HAPPY...they make very good food, at very good prices, and I think it's deserved... Period. This is a haunt for "regulars". If a place has regulars, they MUST HAVE good food and service. If ya bitch about ur flat coke- go to a chain restaurant and overpay for what you can buy in the frozen food aisle at a grocery store....

This place is supposed to be the best Mexican food in Las Cruces? uh NO. First of all they have very poor customer service, probably because they only have two waitresses(Hire More People!) i feel really crowded in there. The wait to get a table is ridiculous too. The food was ok not great like i was told. If your going to have a good Mexican restaurant be sure and have good chips and salsa. the chips were cold and hard.

For decades, Nellie's has been the epitome of absolutely perfect homemade New Mexico style Mexican food. Fresh ingredients, local (hot) red and green chile, recipes that have clearly been passed down through the family. It's small (be ready to wait), noisy, and out-of-this-world delicious. The green chile "double barrel" bañado plate would absolutely without question be my request for a last meal, should such an occasion arise. The salsa is fresh and flavorful (and very spicy). The chips are even home-made. There is nothing on the menu that you won't love if you like this type of food. They deserve more than 5 stars for what they have accomplished with this restaurant.

We had a bowl of Green Chile which was out of this world. For great New Mexican Chile, this was great. We had heard about how busy they are for lunch so we got here about 10:45 and there was no wait and the service was good. Small and great.

Wayyyy overrated. One time the chile rellenos were pretty good. The next time they were really bad - and my husband and I both got sick. The restaurant was closed for poor hygenic practices a week later. They have opened again since then, but we have not been back and don't plan to be. The red chile was really really bad and tasted like taco bell sauce. The service was excellent however. Being a family run business, mostly family works there. They are very friendly and courteous. Update 2012. Three years later, we went back and got sick again...

First of all: Read the filtered reviews. I don't know whether Nellie's is an advertiser with Yelp or not, but a lot of their two-star reviews gel filtered out, despite the fact that the poor rating is richly earned. Here are all the things that are wrong with the restaurant: 1. It is so cramped that surely the fire marshal would have something to say about it. There's also nowhere to wait for tables, so when people are waiting it's in the heat outdoors. 2. Once you are inside, you get to be ignored by the waitresses for some unspecified amount of time. We've been there on several occasions and the waitresses' expressions and interactions with our table have been almost hostile (they do seem to be nice to some of the regulars). The guy who owns the place is nice but is a terrible manager. 3. The food may take forever to come to the table. This last time it took a half hour for the food to arrive, and more than 20 minutes for someone to bring chips and salsa over and take a drink order. Here are the two things that are sort of OK about the restaurant: 1. The reason that this place gets 2 stars rather than 1 is that some of the food is OK. The chips are fresh, although it was obvious to me that the oil used for some of the chips and some of the beans was rancid this time. The green chile beef is very good, as are the eggs with chorizo. The rice is your average bad Spanish rice. Tortillas are good. 2. The prices are reasonable. Overall, I find visiting Nellie's to be much more frustrating than it is enjoyable. If you are looking for good Mexican food in Las Cruces there are many, many better options.

Nellie's has been my favorite restaurant for decades. The staff is friendly and the food is excellent. I try to work my way through the menu whenever I'm in Las Cruces. My favorite dishes are the green chile chicken enchiladas, the green combo #2, and the smothered chile relleno bañado. Their menudo is not to be missed either. I would probably eat there every day if I could.

We came here for the awesome reviews...took 30 minutes to make a burrito? Really? Apparently they forgot about our order and we had to ask where it was twice before they figured out what we had and to get the order in... I feel the long wait outside added to the crappy service deserves a one star. Period.

Tiny, yummy, and amazing. Love the double barrel burritos. But you have to have that giant flat taco thing...I can't think of what they call it but it is freaking amazing and you will need someone to wheel you out of the place from the mexican food coma you are in afterward. I love this place so much. It does get packed. And they close for a week or two in the summer and around Christmas...and both times I have been back since I moved they have been closed, which made me cry. Oh crap, also the queso covered steak...get it! They pretty much only take cash but they have an ATM on site (as I recall). I miss this place.

First - there have been TWO Nellie's in town. They were run by associated family members, but they were two seperate businesses. The one that was closed down for health violations is NOT the one that is still alive and kickin'. Nellie's (the original and only one still in existance) is a familiy run place that has been around forever. They have friendly staff, most of whom are part of the family. They are always so packed at lunch and on weekends, that some times the service can be a little slow or abrupt because they are just so packed, but generally, the service is friendly and fast. Ambiance? Not so much. This is a place to go get great food, not a place to impress a client or take a first date. Mexican food? One of the best. Their rellenos and tostadas compuestas are the best in the city. The rating on yelp does not reflect the quality fo the food - but then again, the people who throng here every lunch hour apparently aren't on yelp. Frankly, this place doesn't need a yelp boost because they already always have a wait.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
